We often hear from Employment Service Providers that early engagement opportunities in the world of work (co-op opportunities, summer jobs, etc.) are the foundation for successful employment. Yet, youth who have a developmental disability face several barriers that impact their early engagement within the labour force.

In early 2021, ODEN conducted research focused on existing employment programs for youth who face multiple barriers to employment.  The goal of the research was to apply findings to services focused on youth who have a developmental disability.  Our study revealed employment success is possible when key elements are emphasized in the lives of young people who have a developmental disability including:

  • Early literacy development

  • Soft employment skills

  • Access to inclusive co-op and work experiences during high school years

These findings are consistent with ODEN’s Family Seminar series – Raising Expectations and Employment: The Gold Standard for Inclusion.

Join us on Thursday, September 9, 2021 at 1:00pm ET to learn more about ODEN’s Youth Success Strategy – Developmental Services project, research outcomes and ODEN’s Family seminar series and the plan to deliver these webinars in the Fall of 2021 to families, caregivers, educators and those working in the developmental services sector.

You and YOUR organization can engage and support these important conversations in your local communities.

For more information on this project, please contact Ingrid Muschta, Director of Special Projects & Innovation at imuschta@odenetwork.com.

The meeting link will be sent to registered participants the day before the event.
